It appears that Apple's grip on the tablet market is loosening. After pioneering the tablet revolution, the electronics giant has held is dominant position as market leader up until now. According to an industry analyst, Apple's share in the tablet market is shrinking and will continue to do so. In Q2 of 2025, 60% of the tablets out there were iPads. By the start of 2025, this figure has plummeted to just 40%. Although 40% is still a relatively large chunk, the 20% drop is massive when you consider the value of the marketplace.
In the first quarter of 2025, Android outsold Apple for the first time by almost 10 million units. Sameer Singh from IDC has said that the number of iPad shipments will likely fall again by the end of the next quarter. Q2 is generally a growth period in this market, but this is always powered by the launch of a new product. However, CEO Tom Cook said that Apple was working hard on developing hardware and software, but that the products will not be for sale until autumn 2025 and throughout 2025. Sameer Singh thinks that this is going to cause trouble.
With no imminent product launch to encourage sales again, there is little reason to believe that it won't continue to slump. He is expecting their sales figure to fall by around 2 million units to 17 or 18 million, pushing Apple's market share below 40%
